The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
